Galloping Urbanisation in Kerala : Census 2011

- Urban population grows by 92.72 per cent over 2001 figure

The urban populace of Kerala has registered a huge growth over the last decade as the number of towns in the State increased three times during the period.

According to the provisional results of Census 2011, the urban population of the State has grown by 92.72 per cent over the last decade. Kerala is home to 3,33,87,677 people as on March 1, 2011 against the 3,18,38,619 of 2001.

In the latest assessment, the number of towns in the State touched 520 against the 159 of the previous count. “The rural population of the State is estimated to be 1,74,55,506 and the urban population 1,59,32,171. The decadal fall in the rural population was 25.96 per cent,” the report said.

The latest census figures state that ‘the rural population of the State was 52.28 per cent (of the total population) as against 74.04 per cent in 2001. The huge growth in urban population during the past decade could be attributed to the manifold increase in the number of towns in the State.' The number of towns increased to 520 from 159 in 2001. The report states Ernakulam as the most urbanised district and Wayanad the least urbanised one.

Sex ratio

The overall sex ratio of the State was found to be 1,084 females per 1,000 males. The sex ratio of rural Kerala was 1,077 (per 1,000 males) and that of urban Kerala 1,091. Sex ratio among children (in the 0-6 age group) was 959.

Literacy

The literacy rate of the State was put at 93.91 per cent. The highest sex ratio was recorded in Kannur district (1,133 females for every 1,000 males) followed by Thrissur (1,109). Idukki had the lowest sex ration with 1,006 females.

Urban Kerala stood ahead in case of literacy with a literacy rate of 94.99 per cent. In the rural population, 92.92 per cent was rated as literate.

Density

Surveys carried out across the State revealed that Thiruvananthapuram was the most densely populated district in the State with 1,509 people per sq. km. The capital was followed by Malappuram (1,158), Alappuzha (1,501), and Kollam (1,056). Idukki recorded the least population density with 254 people per sq. km. The population density of the State was 859 people per sq. km against the 891 of 2001.

Malappuram recorded the highest percentage of decadal growth rate of population with an increase of 13.39 per cent followed by Kasaragod (8.18 per cent).

However, Pathanamthitta and Idukki recorded a fall in percentage decadal growth rate of population. While the population of Pathanamthitta fell by 3.12 per cent, the decline was 1.93 per cent for Idukki.

Malappuram district had the maximum number of inhabitants (41,10,956) followed by Thiruvananthapuram (33,07,284). Idukki was the least-populated district with 5,55,509 residents. The Census exercise witnessed enumerators covering 14 districts, 63 taluks, 520 towns, and 1,018 villages in the State.

During the 2001 listing, 159 towns and 1,364 villages were covered.
